They appear slowly – or even suddenly, making you wonder why your once-unblemished skin is now freckled with occasional darkened spots, called age or liver spots.
At the office of MOSA Surgery, our team of skilled professionals understands how age spots can detract from your appearance and make you feel self-conscious —particularly if the age spots are large and are located in a conspicuous part of your body. Fortunately, we can successfully treat age spots with simple, in-office laser resurfacing treatments.
More common in older adults, age spots are flat, oval areas of increased pigmentation, usually tan, brown or black, and occur on skin that has had the most sun exposure over the years, such as the backs of hands, tops of feet, face, shoulders and upper back. True age spots are harmless and don't need medical treatment.
For cosmetic reasons, we treat age spots in a variety of ways, including laser resurfacing treatments, which work to remove the upper layers of skin. It is sometimes referred to as “laser peeling” since it removes old skin cells in order to reveal newer, more youthful cells. Laser resurfacing heats the underlying skin to promote collagen production, which stimulates skin in the treatment area to heal in a smoother, more even appearance. After treatment, age spots fade gradually over several weeks or months.
