Few parts of your body are not affected by the passage of time. Your epidermis—the outer layer of the two main layers of your skin—is no exception. In fact, your skin is your body’s largest organ. Age spots, which are also referred to by some people as liver spots, can show up gradually or even suddenly.
At the office of MOSA Surgery, our team of skilled professionals understands how age spots can detract from your appearance and make you feel self-conscious—particularly if the darkened spots are significant in size and on visible areas of your skin. But rest assured that they are treatable with easy laser resurfacing treatments that can be done right in our office.
Age spots, which are common in older adults, are flat, round areas that have developed amplified pigment—usually tan, brown or black. They develop on parts of your skin that have been most exposed to the sun, such as your upper back, shoulders, face, tops of feet and backs of hands. Assuming that they’re not signs of early skin cancer, these blemishes are innocuous.
Age spots you want eradicated for cosmetic reasons can be dealt with in a variety of ways, including laser resurfacing treatments. The lasers eliminate the upper levels of skin. The procedure is also known as “laser peeling,” because old skin cells are removed and replaced by newer, younger-looking skin.
The laser heats the underlying skin in order to stimulate the production of collagen. In turn, the treated areas lose the dark pigmentation and are replaced with fresh layers. The age spots fade after a few weeks or months.
