Your skin is exposed to many elements. Though sunlight is the main cause of skin cancer, it can develop in areas that have never seen the light of day, and it’s the most prevalent form of cancer. Up to 50 percent of light-skinned people who live to age 65 will get at least one type of skin cancer.

While removing skin cancer growths, a plastic surgeon uses techniques that clear out the disease and don’t dramatically alter the site’s appearance. Small or contained lesions can be easily excised from the skin; the divot is then closed. Other skin cancers are deceiving in that their superficial appearances are minor indications of the larger, borderless portions that lurk below.
In those instances, a plastic surgeon will continue to cut away small samples and immediately send them to the pathologist until all of the margins return clear of cancer cells.
Large lesions whose removal will cause disfigurement can be renovated with a local flap (formally called adjacent tissue rearrangement). Healthy, neighboring tissue is relocated over the lesions’ sites. For skin cancers on the face, a plastic surgeon will, if feasible, minimize the scar by placing the stitches in the face’s natural curves and creases. Adjacent tissue rearrangement can be used in other areas of the body and be customized to each area’s anatomy.
A large wound can be treated with a skin graft from another, less-noticeable area of the body, such as a thigh or the back. The graft helps it heal, replaces the lost skin and improves its appearance.
Reconstruction closes the skin cancer defect, but no reconstruction is perfect. Visible scars will remain at incision sites. There may also be lasting changes in texture or color. The most important change will be that the skin cancer will be gone.
