If you have a septum that’s so deviated (crooked or bent instead of straight) that it gives you breathing problems, congestion and headaches, you’ll want to consider septoplasty. It’s a surgical procedure that lets air flow more efficiently through your nostrils. Adolescents and adults are the average candidates for septoplasty. A plastic surgeon is the perfect medical specialist to perform it.
The office of MOSA Surgery is expert at performing all plastic surgery procedures. At the same time, we have an elite team with the ability, focus and flexibility to demonstrate unparalleled professional knowledge. We take as much time as you need to address your every concern and clearly explain your options in care.
Some people are born with a deviated septum, while other septums become deviated during an injury. The septum, which is 2.5 to 3 inches long in adults, is the bone and cartilage that separate the inside of your nasal cavity into two chambers (the nostrils).
Septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The operation is confined to the inner nose and lasts from 30 to 90 minutes. Because it’s a minor, low-risk procedure, it’s typically done on an outpatient basis, so most patients needn’t stay overnight. The treatment area is swollen for two to three days. Recovery usually takes a few days and needs a week of downtime. Complete healing may take up to three months.
Septoplasty resolves other nasal issues as well. It removes nasal polyps, which are spongy, painless growths that can develop in the lining of the nose or sinuses. People with allergies, asthma, and recurring infections or nasal inflammation are most susceptible to these noncancerous lumps. Septoplasty also treats chronic sinusitis, which is inflammation or infection that won’t clear up within 12 weeks. This ailment produces post-nasal drip, thick mucus in the nose and facial pain.
