If you want an elective or reconstructive plastic surgery procedure that’s not quite within your budget, you might be thinking about getting it done out of the United States for low-priced care. Or, maybe you have enough money but want to get a “twofer”—plastic surgery and a vacation. But this, called “plastic surgery tourism,” comes with risks.
The office of MOSA Surgery uses the latest diagnosis and treatment technology to help our patients deal with any issues that require plastic surgery services. You can be confident that you’ll receive top-notch quality and safety standards.
Weigh these five disadvantages when contemplating plastic surgery out of the States.
Lax regulations
Plastic surgeons in the U.S. are medically licensed to practice here, their surgeries meet the rigorous requirements of the CDC, their medications are certified by the FDA, and the majority are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Not all other countries strictly adhere to our strict standards.
Contaminations
You might acquire antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Many foreign medical facilities’ standards to control contagions are lacking, and some nations’ water will sicken you because you haven’t had time to build up immunity to the local disease-carrying organisms.
Recovery problems
Not being fluent in the local language can lead you to misinterpret or not understand your recovery instructions. If you develop a serious post-surgical infection, adequate healthcare may not be readily available. Your trip back home will likely involve a sedentary plane or car trip; this can promote blood clots.
Your detailed medical history
Your regular doctors use their knowledge of your past and present (drug allergies, surgeries, family history, medications) to treat you safely and proficiently. Without that comprehensive data, you could have a less effective—and even dangerous—experience.
Out-of-pocket expenses
Insurance companies don’t cover elective plastic surgeries performed in the U.S., including recuperation care when you’re back home. You would be hard-pressed to find one that covers reconstructive surgeries done outside the U.S.
Carefully review these caveats when pondering going international. Better yet, have it done here at the office of MOSA Surgery. We use state-of-the-art knowledge and technology to perform a complete array of procedures with the utmost care and precision. Please call us today to schedule an appointment!
