What is Botox?
It’s a popular injectable that temporarily reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in the face—mostly frown lines, forehead creases, skin dimpling of the chin and crow’s feet around the eyes. Several other areas have been treated, such as thick bands in the neck, thick jaw muscles, gummy smiles, and fine lines above and below the lips. Botox is used for a variety of medical conditions but usually for lessening the signs of aging.
What’s in it and how does it work?
Botox is a purified substance derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This very diluted concentration of a neurotoxin blocks nerve signals to muscles, which prevents them from contracting. Botox works on only dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles that emerge when the face is moving.
Just about anyone, except for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What is the recovery like?
There’s relatively no downtime after Botox injections. It’s quick and easy. Facelifts and brow lifts can take weeks of recovery.
How long do Botox’s effects last?
Three to six months, when your muscles will start to relax again and the wrinkles and fine lines return. Botox isn’t an alternative to surgical procedures or a solution for sagging skin.
